Code of Ethics

B&B Pool and Spa follows the Northeast Spa & Pool Association APSP Affiliate Code of Ethics, which follow:

All members of the Northeast Spa and Pool Association - APSP Affiliate shall be dedicated to and will comply with the following principles and policies:

(a) To hold inviolate the concepts of free enterprise and unselfish service to the public;

(b) To strive continually to gain respect for the industry, both in the local community and on the regional and national levels;

(c) To make the largest contribution possible to the health, safety and welfare of the public in the installation, maintenance and operation of swimming pools, spas and hot tubs;

(d) To support all efforts to improve "swimming pool industry" products and services, and to encourage research and the development of new materials, techniques and methods;

(e) To advertise and sell the merits of my products and services, and to encourage research and the development of new materials, techniques and methods;

(f) To reveal all the material facts, to avoid concealment of information and refrain from the use of innuendoes in advertising and selling that might cause customers to be misled, so that the truth about their services or products may be fully understood by the trusting as well as the analytical;

(g) To advertise only bona fide prices and products and to refrain from the use of "bait" advertising methods;

(h) To design or build in a manner compatible in every respect with public health and safety, and to comply with all applicable laws, ordinances and regulations; and

(i) To fulfill all contractual obligations and to offer a reasonable warranty on products and services and to perform on such warranty, either written or implied, where justifiable claims are in order and to do this without hesitation or delay.

Pool Safety Guidelines

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued the following pool safety information and federal guidelines:

Use Layers of Protection

To insure safety in swimming pools, layers of protection are essential. Place barriers completely around the pool, closely supervise young children, and be prepared in case of emergency.

In addition:

• If a child is missing, always look first in the pool. Seconds count.
• Never use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision.
• Keep rescue equipment and a phone next to the pool.
• Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
• Install physical barriers around the pool to limit access.

o Fences and walls should be at least 4-feet high and installed completely around the pool.

o Gates should be self-closing and self-latching. The latch should be out of reach of small children.

• If your house forms one side of the barrier for the pool, doors leading from the house to the pool should be protected with alarms that sound when the doors are unexpectedly opened. Or, use a power safety pool cover, a motor-powered barrier placed over the water area, to prevent access by young children.
• For above-ground pools, steps and ladders to the pool should be secured or removed when the pool is not in use.

Pool and Spa Entrapment Dangers

• There are anti-entrapment drain covers that are compliant with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool And Spa Safety Law.

o This is a Federal requirement for public pools that preempts the state or local law, as of Dec. 19, 2008.

• Never use a pool or spa with a missing or broken drain cover. Be sure a newer, safer drain cover is in place. The new drain covers are usually domed-shaped, rather than flat, like older drain covers.
• Consider installing a Safety Vacuum Release System (SVRS), a device that will automatically shut off a pump if a blockage is detected.
• Have a professional regularly inspect your pool or spa for entrapment or entanglement hazards.
• Plainly mark the location of the electrical cut-off switch for the pool or spa pump.
• If someone is entrapped against a drain, cut off the pump immediately. Instead of trying to pull the person away from the powerful suction, pry a hand between the drain and the person’s body to break the seal.

Your Perfect Vacation

There’s a way to enjoy that “day off” and it can be done sitting poolside at home. You don’t have to plan to go to the pool, just hop in. You can invite people you know you’ll enjoy, get some exercise while swimming, or just relax in your private “staycation.”

Infant Water Survival Programs for NY and NJ

Chestnut Ridge, NY, May, 2010. Swim/Infant Aquatics Instructors Keri Tom and Cari Lopez — premier drowning prevention and aquatic survival specialists — will appear June 19 and 20 at B&B Pool and Spa Center to present information and demonstrate infant water survival skills. Tom and Lopez will appear at B&B's Chestnut Ridge Showroom for the second year in a row. The programs are free and open to the public.

Drowning is the number one cause of death for children ages four and under in the United States, yet it’s not widely known that more than 70% of those incidents happen in natural bodies of water — not in man-made pools. In fact, more children lose their lives in buckets of water than they do in swimming pools.

An advocate for safe pools and spas since its founding in 1972, B&B continues its active role by creating greater public awareness about water safety and ways to help increase safe recreation in public waterways. “As a member of the national Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, B&B is committed to promoting consumer safety,” said Craig Bagin, B&B’s Vice President. The company’s efforts have resulted in B&B Pool and Spa Center being named the official Water Safety Sponsor by both the American Heritage Rivers Alliance and the Hudson River Navigator.

“Children who grow up with pools have the distinct advantage of being able to learn to swim safely under the guidance of parents and guardians,” said Craig Bagin, "And we recommend that everyone learn how to swim as early as possible."

Visitors to the B&B showroom, especially parents of young children, can meet trainers Tom and Lopez. “Teaching babies the most essential survival skill, how to roll-to-float and continue to breathe, is not something most parents even think is possible,” Lopez noted. “Even after taking years of swimming lessons, many children haven’t been able to fully learn survival skills.” To help remedy this problem, B&B will host two informational sessions with Tom and Lopez on each day of the weekend at 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 19 and 20.

“If you’ve never seen what these trainers can do, you’re in for an amazing, eye-opening experience,” explained Bruce Bagin, President of B&B. “Watching a six-month old who can save herself in the water is one of the most emotional experiences I’ve ever had.”

After the free orientations at the B&B showroom, Tom and Lopez will be offering infant Aquatics lessons in the NY and northern NJ area from June 21 – July 30. Morning lessons will be held at Pearl River, NY; early afternoon lessons will be held in Emerson, NJ; and late afternoon lessons will be held in White Plains, NY. It takes 4-6 weeks of daily lessons (Mon-Fri) to complete the full series. Per child, there is an initial registration fee of $75 and lesson fees are $195 per week.
